Key Destinations

Where to See the Big Five in Tanzania

You choose the parks. We design the route. Each destination offers different wildlife dynamics, landscapes and accommodation styles.

Serengeti National Park

The Serengeti is Tanzania's most famous safari destination and a stronghold for big cats. Vast open plains create excellent conditions for lion and leopard sightings, especially during the Great Migration when predator-prey interactions reach their peak. The park also supports large buffalo herds and resident elephants.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area

The Ngorongoro Crater offers one of Africa's highest concentrations of large mammals in a relatively compact area. It is particularly notable for its resident black rhino population, along with healthy lion, elephant and buffalo numbers. A crater floor game drive can deliver multiple Big Five sightings in a single day.

Tarangire National Park

Tarangire is famous for its large elephant herds — some of the biggest in northern Tanzania. The park's baobab-studded landscape also supports lion, leopard and buffalo. During the dry season, wildlife concentrates around the Tarangire River, making for exceptional game viewing.

Lake Manyara National Park

A smaller but diverse park, Lake Manyara offers varied habitats from groundwater forest to open floodplains. It is known for its elephants, tree-climbing lions, buffalo and extensive birdlife. It works well as a starting or finishing point on a northern circuit Big Five safari.

Combine destinations or focus on one region. Northern Tanzania offers classic circuits. Southern parks like Ruaha and Nyerere can also be incorporated for travelers seeking a more remote Big Five experience.

The Big Five

Big Five Animals in Tanzania

Wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed, but Tanzania offers some of Africa's best opportunities to encounter these iconic species.

Lion

Serengeti and Ngorongoro offer excellent lion viewing. Strong prides are resident in both areas, and the Great Migration brings exceptional predator-prey interactions.

Leopard

Leopards are widespread but naturally elusive. Serengeti and Tarangire offer good opportunities, but sightings always depend on conditions and a good measure of luck.

Elephant

Tarangire is particularly famous for its large elephant herds, especially in the dry season. Ruaha in southern Tanzania is another important elephant stronghold.

Buffalo

Buffalo can be encountered across many Tanzanian wildlife areas, including Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Tarangire. Large herds are common in the northern circuit.

Rhino

Rhino sightings are rarer. Ngorongoro Crater is one of the best places in Tanzania for travelers hoping to see black rhino in the wild.

Note: We never guarantee specific wildlife sightings. We plan itineraries to maximize your opportunities based on seasonal wildlife movements and our guides' local knowledge.

Timing Your Safari

Best Time for a Big Five Safari in Tanzania

There is no single "best" month — the right time depends on what you want to see and experience.

June – October (Dry Season)

Generally easier wildlife viewing. Less vegetation means better visibility, and animals concentrate around water sources. Peak season for the northern Serengeti river crossings.

January – March

Excellent for the southern Serengeti calving season. Thousands of wildebeest calves attract significant predator activity. Warm, generally dry weather.

November – December

Green landscapes after the short rains. Migratory birdlife returns. Generally fewer visitors than peak season, with good wildlife viewing in many areas.

April – May (Green Season)

Heavier rainfall in some areas but spectacular green scenery. Lower visitor numbers and often better value. Some camps close during this period.

Trip Length

How Many Days Do You Need?

3–4 Days

Suitable for a focused safari covering a small number of key destinations. Works well if you want to combine with a shorter trip or add Zanzibar.

5–7 Days

Allows time for multiple parks and a deeper wildlife experience. A good balance for most Big Five safari travelers.

8–10+ Days

Better for travelers who want a slower pace, multiple regions, photography-focused safaris or to combine Northern + Southern Tanzania.

Zanzibar can be added after any safari length. Many travelers combine a 5–7 day Big Five safari with 3–5 days on the beach.
